Winter Wonderland

This month we have been learning about winter, snow, and arctic animals

MATH ACTIVITIES

Working on counting, quantifying and recognizing numerals by placing the correct number of snowflakes on the playdough mats

We've been working on measuring.  We made a class book measuring how many mittens long we are and then using rulers and tape measures to see how many inches we are.

We also discovered that an emperor penguin is 4 feet tall.  We measured to see if we were taller than an emperor penguin and then how many baby penguin chicks we were.

LITERACY ACTIVITIES

Writing "yes" or "no" predictions to the questions about penguins

We were surprised to learn that penguins use their wings for swimming!

 

We made snowmen and wrote our names

Being authors and illustrators!  The class wrote and illustrated a snowman story together.

SCIENCE ACTIVITIES

Discovering how arctic animals survive in icy cold temperatures

All Aboard--Transportation!

Learning how to work together to build the number train puzzle!  We counted to 20!

During letter "T" week we learned about the word "transportation."  We brainstormed ways we could get from one place to another. 

We sorted out transportation counters by land, air, and water and made a graph to see which one had more.

The race is on! We played a car racing game by rolling a dice and writing the letter on the dice to see which letter would win!

We introduced different maps and talked about map symbols and what they mean.  Then we drew our own maps!

Pumpkin Investigation

Pumpkins are so much fun to explore in the fall.  We decided to complete a pumpkin investigation to see what we could discover.

We explored the outside of the pumpkin by feeling the outside, inside, using our senses, and describing what we saw.  We learned some new vocabulary words like "pumpkin ribs".  During our exploration we counted ribs, seeds, and measured the pumpkin.

Here is the report from pumpkin investigation:

We used the pumpkin we cut up to make several different pumpkin recipes.  We made pumpkin muffins, pumpkin seeds, and pumpkin soup (after reading the book Pumpkin Soup, we decided we wanted to try it!)

Mmmm....pumpkin soup!  We loved it!!!

We learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin.  Here is a child sequencing the cards putting the life cycle in order.

We made pumpkin scented playdough and used our problem solving skills to make different shapes out of the playdough.

Fire Safety Week

Fire Safety Week in October

We explored shapes and put together fire trucks.

We learned that when you are on fire, you need to Stop, Drop, and Roll.  We took turns and practiced with our pretend fire.

We had a visit from the fire department to teach us about fire safety and to let us explore a fire truck! We were surprised by all the gear firefighters need to wear when they go out to fight fires.  Thank you to the guys from the fire department who took time out of their busy schedules to teach us about fire safety!

To wrap up the what we learned in the week, we worked on our emergent reading skills by putting together a fire safety poem.
