We are thankful for friends!

All Aboard--Transportation!

Learning how to work together to build the number train puzzle!  We counted to 20!
During letter "T" week we learned about the word "transportation."  We brainstormed ways we could get from one place to another.
We sorted out transportation counters by land, air, and water and made a graph to see which one had more.
The race is on! We played a car racing game by rolling a dice and writing the letter on the dice to see which letter would win!
Trying to find Chadron on the map
We introduced different maps and talked about map symbols and what they mean.  Then we drew our own maps!

Pumpkin Investigation

Pumpkins are so much fun to explore in the fall.  We decided to complete a pumpkin investigation to see what we could discover.
We explored the outside of the pumpkin by feeling the outside, inside, using our senses, and describing what we saw.  We learned some new vocabulary words like "pumpkin ribs".  During our exploration we counted ribs, seeds, and measured the pumpkin.
Here is the report from pumpkin investigation:
We used the pumpkin we cut up to make several different pumpkin recipes.  We made pumpkin muffins, pumpkin seeds, and pumpkin soup (after reading the book Pumpkin Soup, we decided we wanted to try it!)
Mmmm....pumpkin soup!  We loved it!!!

We learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin.  Here is a child sequencing the cards putting the life cycle in order.
Writing pumpkin stories in our journals
We made pumpkin scented playdough and used our problem solving skills to make different shapes out of the playdough.

Fire Safety Week

Fire Safety Week in October
We explored shapes and put together fire trucks.

We learned that when you are on fire, you need to Stop, Drop, and Roll.  We took turns and practiced with our pretend fire.
We had a visit from the fire department to teach us about fire safety and to let us explore a fire truck! We were surprised by all the gear firefighters need to wear when they go out to fight fires.  Thank you to the guys from the fire department who took time out of their busy schedules to teach us about fire safety!
To wrap up the what we learned in the week, we worked on our emergent reading skills by putting together a fire safety poem.

Exploring Colors

Our color changing experiment with water and food coloring.  Each cup has one of the primary colors and we placed a paper towel between two cups and watched as each color traveled up and connected together to make a new color!

The students learned what primary colors are and mixed two colors together to make a secondary color

We worked on sorting objects into groups.  Many students matched colors together

Each day we dressed in a different color.  This was purple day!!!

A is for Apple!

This week in the preschool we learned about the letter A and explored activities surrounding apples.
We wrote down all the things we knew about apples at the beginning of the week into a web chart.  The students discussed the colors of apples, what you can make with apples and how an apple grows.

During one of our small group times, we made predictions if an apple will sink or float when put into water.  Many students thought it would sink but were surprised to see that it floats in the water.  We wrote down our results after our experiment.
We read several stories and poems about apples throughout the week.  Here is Sugar matching the word "apple" to one of the poems we read.
Ms. Becky brought in a big bag of apples from an apple tree and we worked on cutting up apples (with butter knives) and measuring to make homemade applesauce.  It was yummy!
Look at all the apples we cut up!
Teagen stirring up the spices into the apples
Eating our applesauce with our lunch!
We tasted four different kinds of apples (gala, red delicious, golden delicious, and granny smith).  We discovered which ones we liked best and graphed the class favorite.
Teagen coloring her apple for the class graph
Our class graph of our favorite flavor of apple.  Looks like the winner is Granny Smith
We worked on our coloring, cutting and patterning skills by making an apple pattern crown.
A is for Apple (The leaf of the apple is our hand print)
We learned the story about Johnny Appleseed and put the sequence of how an apple tree grows in order.  What a fun week of learning about apples!
