Our classroom has been working hard on positive behavior supports the past 3 years.  Last year Kathy Smith and some of her middle school students made a video of our classroom teaching social skills to share with others.  Check it out below for ideas on how you can use some of the positive behavior supports at home with your child.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Congratulations, you have chosen an early childhood center that is participating in the Nebraska Department of Education’s Pyramid Project! The Pyramid Model is a framework of evidence-based practices that promote social, emotional, and behavioral competence in young children (Fox, Dunlap, Hemmeter, Joseph & Strain, 2003). Teachers will receive coaching and training to improve how we support children’s social and emotional development.  Family involvement is a large part of this project. With your cooperation, classroom teachers, and program staff will be working together to teach your child the following behavior expectations:
Be Safe – using toys and materials appropriately,
following classroom rules, healthy habits, etc.

Be Respectful – soft touches, take turns, share toys,
using an inside voice, help a friend, use kind words, etc.

Be Responsible– take care of classroom materials,
follow directions, be a good listener, etc.

Outcomes for children in programs that promote positive behavior systems (PBS) include:
-      Challenging behavior referrals decrease.
-      Children understand and follow behavior expectations.
-      Children support each other in following classroom expectations.
-      Children are able to transition from one classroom to another without difficulty.
-      Children adjust to the classroom more quickly.

In addition, we want to partner with you to make sure your child can learn to use these expectations at home and preschool. Every month, we will be sending you tips on how you can help your child learn social skills. When you visit your child’s classroom, you will see the many ways that we will be helping your children learn and practice the expectations in a nurturing environment.  We are excited about this effort and look forward to working with you and your child!
